About Town

Angie Lane and son, Bailey, came by one evening last week to bring the Kevin McNamara’s army address. Kevin would love to hear from family and friends. Please take a few minutes to drop him a line. He has a lot of family in the area. Mail call can be lonely, if a guy or gal doesn’t get letters. Let us take time to let our service men and women know we appreciate them. His address is: Pvt. McNamara, Kevin, 2nd PLT Maddawgs, D-1/40th FA, Fort Sill, OK, 73503, put a big "2" on the right side of the back of the envelope. His friend, Bruce Laird, also called to ask that Kevin’s friends send letters to him.

Bobbi McPherson who is a student at DeVry University in Kansas City, enjoyed a week at home with her family and friends. Because of her job she didn’t get to come home for Christmas so it was good to see her during Spring Break. We were happy to have her visit us Monday afternoon. Her church family and patrons at the Our Place restaurant were glad to see her back and about town.

Congratulations to Julie Baxter who was married to Billy Joe Tate in Lubbock, Texas. Billy had three days notice before being called back from Oklahoma to go with the Marine Reserves to Kuwait with his unit. Julie is a pharmacy tech in Guyman, Oklahoma, and is looking forward to graduating from Oklahoma Panhandle State University in May. Julie’s parents are Steve and Marilyn Baxter of Eads.

Brad, Kylie (Weirich), and baby, McKenzie Jo, were hosted at a baby shower by the ladies of the Eads First Christian Church Sunday afternoon. Blessings be with this family who now live in Colorado Springs.

Congratulations to the Lady Eagles and the Boys Basketball teams on their wins at the Regional Tournament in La Junta last Saturday. They did a great job playing and the nicest thing was that all the players got out on the floor the last quarter and did a great job of holding the score. This is the dream of each player to really be a part of the team and at Regionals yet! Great job kids! We are proud of all of you. Good luck this week on Thursday through Saturday as the teams compete in Pueblo at the State Tourney.

I’m told that much of Kiowa County was at the La Junta gym for the basketball play-offs as well as many former students from colleges and also alumni from years way back and a number of whom drove long distances.

Dan and Evelyn Garner were glad to have their sons, Jim and Gale, home to help them this weekend. They also went to the games in La Junta though.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Howard and Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Lessenden of Eads were among those who attended the Garden Show in Colorado Springs last weekend. I hear there is a Garden Show in Pueblo next week and one in Lamar April 11 and 12th. People are eager to learn more about plants that take less water for their yards.

"Happy Birthday" to our neighbor, Elberta Howerton. God bless her this week and in years to come.

Kristi Baxter of Denver was home to visit her parents, Steve and Marilyn, last weekend. Kristi is a store marketer for the Colorado Rockies Baseball team for their sportswear.

Red Craven came home from the Hugo hospital Sunday afternoon. We pray that he will make a rapid recovery.

Friday we went to Kit Carson to take Lenten candles and some Lent Cross decorations the Charles Howard’s gave to Trinity Lutheran Church. We had a nice visit with Bonnie Wood. It was a beautiful day and we even saw a big herd of antelope. It’s so dry that we rarely have seen them lately. We also enjoyed baked potatoes with broccoli and cheese from Just Betty’s, that’s my favorite.

Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Glover are home after a two month stay in Arizona which they enjoyed very much.

Sincere sympathy to the family of Ruth Morton of Las Animas.

We are glad to hear that Richard Morgan is back from the hospital in Colorado Springs. He is staying at Weisbrod Nursing Home at this time. We hope he is much improved in health. Our prayers are with him.

We hope Curtis Shrimp has a rapid recovery from hip surgery. It seems most people do heal quickly anymore. We’ll all look forward to his news, "Wild Horse Roundup" to be in the Press soon.

Glenda, Blake, and Colby Stoker came by after Colby had her baby shots last week. We had such a joyous visit. It is no nice to keep up with these precious little ones. Glenda shared photos with us of them and the rest of her family. She is a great photographer.

Areta Laird, Dreama, Rachel, and Jacob, and James Deverman visited us during the week. We appreciate the kind thoughtful things they do.

Most people dread March winds and they blew in several days last week with just a few snow flakes. By Friday and Saturday it was warmer, I can even see green plants in the south garden growing up through the dry leaves.

The Eads United Methodist Women hosted the Sunshine District meeting Saturday where 41 women came from many different towns to enjoy a program of skits, Bible study, fellowship and a salad luncheon.

"Happy Birthday" to Phil and Kristi Hirsch this week and through the years.

We heard good reports about the talent shown by 4-H members at the Talent Fun Night. Now the winners move on to the District competition in La Junta March 22.
