About Town

Merril Trosper of Kingfisher, Oklahoma was delighted last week when her son, Bill, drove down to bring her back to Colorado so she could see her grandson, Ryan, #32, play in the District Basketball games. Merril says she has subscribed to the Kiowa County Press for years so she could read About Town news and cut out articles about her three grandsons, Matt, Timy, and Ryan. Timy and Gloria Gaynor took her home Sunday.

Faye Barber and Pansy Foxworthy attended the Task Force meeting in Stratton last week. We appreciate these people who keep in touch with all areas of our senior citizen program to keep us informed. These benefits and services mean a lot to all of us. I noticed on the Meals on Wheels menu sheet that there had been a "problem at Eads". We hope people will pay for their meals to keep the program going for all. One can’t help but appreciate the meals and all the efforts put into the program. Let’s keep it going by prompt payment for the good of all people.

Congratulations to the Lady Eagle Basketball team on their great performance in leading the game over number one state ranked McClave. Eads won the district championship trophy Saturday afternoon. The boy’s team placed second in the game with Cheraw. Both Eads teams will play in La Junta beginning at 2:00 p.m. at the Regional Tournament Saturday to vie for a berth in the State Tournament. We are proud of both teams. Many fans, who are homebound or working, really do appreciate the radio coverage of the games.

Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Belveal and granddaughters visited us Saturday afternoon. They had been to her parents, Phil and Madonna Pollreis, near Wiley, to deliver and install a computer for mom. We had a real fun visit. Dreama, Shannon and Dylan dropped by also.

Each student in Lana Peterson’s fifth grade class displayed wonderful Science Fair experiments on a variety of biological and physical science topics last week. We applaud her support of the science fair program and the research by the students. Jake Fox and Brandon Adamson 5th graders, and 6th grader, Tyler Fox will exhibit their projects at the Regional Fair. The other elementary classes exhibited group projects in the show.

Congratulations to Connie Richardson of Eads on being nominated for the "Florence Nightingale" award. Connie has been a nurse and works in various areas of the profession. I have seen her working in several roles in the medical field as nurse, EMT, an administrator, and home health. I believe that she is an excellent person for this award.

Middle School and Pee Wee Wrestling at Eads is in full swing with practices and tournaments.

My next door neighbor’s children had the joy and enough snow to build a snow man. No doubt Dad and Mom enjoyed this joyful time too.

Betsy Evans stopped by one morning last week en-route to La Junta. She is one of Trinity Lutheran Church’s special servants and a joy to all. She will be teaching Sunday School and is a blessing to our youth

James Deverman was happy to have his friend, Daniel Jurge, of McClave to spend the weekend with him. The boys have spent a number of weekends together through the years.

We are sorry that my granddaughter, Dally Jo, was out of school last week due to illness. I hope she was back on the bus Monday morning. There has been a lot of illness around. Hopefully, prayerfully we will get a good snow or rain to clear the air.

Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Lessenden visited us Thursday evening before going to the Art Gallery. Artists about town gather every Thursday night there to work on projects of their media of choice. Their son, Tearle, went to Fort Collins that night so he could attend meetings on Friday.

Phil and Kristi Hirsch and children of Manhattan, Kansas, went to Waco, Nebraska where they spent the time with his two brothers, Paul and Mark, and families, to enjoy playing teen and adult basketball. It is nice they can spend quality time together.

Ladies of the United Methodist Church are preparing to host the Sunshine District Missionary League in Eads Saturday with a salad luncheon and program.

Last Wednesday we did have a skiff of snow, but Friday we had a good, soft snow that appeared to be about 3" to 4". It is the most snow we have had this year. Nothing too deep, however an "angel" came by to scoop the walk and steps. Doris was so happy when she looked out to see it was done. Thanks to whomever did this for their kindness.

Doris finally has time to put her treasured photos in albums. Something she has put off doing for several years. These albums are treasures to look through to see the youth who have attended Eads schools and have gone on to their chosen ways and always with her prayers and best wishes

Helen Cummings Demars of Carlton Minnesota called us last week to tell us her twin brother was in the Kearney, Nebraska hospital following surgery. Helen and Hyland grew up north of Kit Carson. She drove to Kearny to be with him and his wife, Mildred, for a few days. She says they have had very little snow in Minnesota.

Eads Middle School hosted a Knowledge Bowl last week. Several schools competed in this first meet. Thanks to the advisors, Dawn James and Tammy Ullman.

4-H members will present their Fun Night Talent Show at the Crow-Luther Arts Center Friday, March 7th at 6:00 p.m.

The Artist of the Plains Gallery is offering an oil painting class by a noted artist, Jeff Books on March 15th. For more information, you may call Sandy Jones.
