Baby Bear Hugs Gala Very SuccessfulFebruary 28, 2003 "United for Children" was the theme of the 4th annual Baby Bear Hugs Gala. The gala was held February 15, 2003 at the Washington County Event Center in Akron. The purpose of the event was to gain new insights into parenting, learn about healthy brain development, and celebrate Baby Bear Hugs / Baby’s First Steps volunteers and community involvement. Since its’ beginning, 693 volunteers have served 1,785 families, and 3,201 Warm Welcome visits have been accomplished. It was an important part of the Gala Celebration to give thanks to various segments of the organization because without all of their hard work the program would not be a success. Those honored were volunteer visitors, county advisory committee members, staff, and members of the board of directors. The "Bearer Award", created to recognize outstanding individuals who have contributed to the program and its success, was presented to Dee Kaster and Linda Schreivogel from Kit Carson County. Dee and Linda, who work for Department of Health and Human Services, have served on the county advisory committee, helped with fundraisers, referred families to the program and gone above and beyond the call of duty to support the program. The keynote presentation was given by Dr. Linda Lockwood on "Tools for Healthy Brain Development" Dr. Lockwood, has her PhD. in Neuroscience and is with the Department of Psychology at Metropolitan State College of Denver. It has been proven that a child’s brain develops at an incredible rate between the ages of 0-3. She noted

that during this time, parents should provide stimulation of the child’s senses, which does not require expensive toys. A parent’s loving touch and interaction can provide a child much of the stimulation that is necessary for the child’s development. Becky Bledsoe, Board Vice Chair, gave an inspirational message and everyone in attendance was moved by the patriotic music sung by Scott Chapin. Throughout the program, door prizes were given that had been donated by businesses in the various counties. In Kiowa County, Jennifer Crow donated a basket of candles from Home Interiors and Gifts. We also want to thank Sedgwick County Memorial Hospital and Kit Carson County Memorial Hospital for helping to sponsor the Baby Bear Hugs Gala.
