About TownFebruary 28, 2003 Eads Senior Citizens had their noon dinner meeting February 19th with a very delicious meal. Thanks to George Crow for the roast beef. A pretty large group filled the dining room. President Faye Barber chaired the meeting with Esther McCoin reading the minutes and Gloria Peck presenting the financial report. The March dinner will be on the 19th. A number of people stayed after the meeting for a fun card game of Pitch. Colorado Share representative, Marsha Myers, brought leaflets for Colorado Share to the Senior Center. There are several types of food products at different prices. If anyone is interested they could call Marsha at 438-5873 to make an order or to volunteer to help distribute the food from the Eads Bowling Alley building. James and Cleta Englehardt and Cindy Pittman take about 40 family coolers to Haswell on the fourth Saturday of the month. It’s a good deal! Brian and Louis James were in Denver the evening of February 13th where Brian was honored at a reception for students who were nominated to be a Colorado High School Activities Association Student of the Week last year. Congratulations, also, to Brian who has been accepted to Colorado State University and has been awarded a sizeable CSU scholarship already. Mark and Julie (Oswald) Kelley and children were in Eads Friday to visit relatives and both grandparents, LaVerle Kelley and Florris Oswald. Son, David, looked very handsome in his army uniform. He leaves soon for Ft. Hood, Texas, and then on to Kuwait. Sister, Bettina, flew home from Hawaii to see her brother. She is completing a massage therapy course there. David’s sister, Jessica, was here also. She goes to high school in Kansas. Basketball handler, Remington Brandt, Eads 4th grader, represented this side of the state in the Colorado Elks Hoop Shoot contest at Salida, over the weekend. He tied for third place and came away with fourth place in the State after a shoot-off. Remington said he had a good time and was glad his family and grandparents, Cardon and Joyce Berry were there to cheer him on. Congratulations to Gary and Kristie Borns on their anniversary March 1st. I well remember going to their wedding in Haxton. The weather was typical wet March weather when we drove on unpaved muddy roads north of Kit Carson. But it was worth it. We always considered Gary a special friend at our church. Sis Howard of Eads, Mona Appel of Lamar, Betsy Evans of Kit Carson, and Marcy Ricke of Cheyenne Wells were in Denver several days last week to attend the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League officers training meeting. We applaud these ladies for the work they do in their churches and at state level as they plan district and national programs.

Henry Ashida sent Doris some great photos of some of the Eads Wrestlers taken at the Regional Tournament in Pueblo and at Crowley. She sent them on to the young men and had some mounted at school. Cody Cordova and Kelly Lindholm’s matches on Friday at the State Tournament must have been so exciting when they won in double overtime. Dwight and Bonnie took her mother, Hazel Spady, out to dinner last Wednesday evening at Our Place Restaurant. I’m sure it must have been very special for Hazel as I remember that she and Elk used to come over from Haswell to eat out often. Shalyn Laird was in Lamar Friday to continue working on her 4-H ceramic projects so she will have more time for the other 4-H projects she takes. That’s good planning. I heard that my granddaughter, Dally, did some 4-H cooking and sewing this weekend too. Shaner and Dally have had more baby lambs. They say are so cute. Friday night was our last home high school basketball games that brought a big crowd of fans before both varsity teams play in District Play-Offs this week. The fans were treated to good games, plus a dance and tumbling act by middle school age Cheyenne Wells girls dressed in purple velvet and lame’ costumes. A skilled young man was a part of the group also. The Eads high school dance team under the direction of Haley Gibbs performed a routine. Pep Club and Student Council Sponsor, Pam Cole and helpers presented carnations with purple ribbons to the player’s parents. The basketball players also gave lovely fresh floral arrangement to Coach Randel’s parents, Jim and Diana Randel to thank them for the lovely Valentine gifts they gave to the players. Lily Fox, former retired Eads elementary teacher, was honored as the Senior Citizen of the Week. She has been a very loyal fan at sporting events and the activities at Eads Schools through the years. She was presented a floral arrangement by the Gooden family. The basketball players gave baked goods to the bus drivers, score keepers, and balloons, pop, and goodies were given to the coaches in appreciation from the teams. Another event was the Dessert Auction by the Band and Band Booster Parents. Welcome to our block, Mr. and Mrs. Steve Phillips and children. They live in the former Faye Barber home and we do welcome them to Eads. Doris joined several ladies on the county bus for her first experience last Wednesday. She and the ladies really enjoyed the kindness shown to all of them as they went to and from various appointments. What a wonderful service our county does provide. The Haswell Westenders braved the cold weather Sunday evening to play cards at the center for their monthly card night. Eads ladies, Zelda Peterson, Hazel Krueger, Gloria Peck, Pam Addington, and Melissa Peterson, were in La Junta Saturday for their Quilting Club get together. Hazel taught the club ladies that day how to make flying geese. They say she is a good teacher.
