Superintendent Given Sterling Review by RE-1 BoardJanuary 31, 2003 The Kiowa County School District RE-1 Board of Education met in a brief, regularly scheduled session Tuesday evening with board members Marty Miller, Bill Woelk, Debi Hadley, Larry Watts, Ralph Berry and Marlynn Eikenberg present. Board member John Weirich was absent. The board spent about 25 minutes of its 50 minute meeting in executive session to evaluate Superintendent Glenn Smith. Smith was excluded from the most of the session, but was called in to the meeting shortly before the board re-opened the session to the public. Woelk then announced that the board had given Smith a good rating, and commended him for looking to the future in preparing teachers and students. In addition, Smith was praised for his work to improve the financial condition of the district. "Thank you; we appreciate what you’ve done," Woelk concluded. In other business, the board learned that the bulk of the work on re-constructing the hallway that connects the main high school building to the gymnasium will take place during spring break, according to the latest schedule. Smith also informed the board that a Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) grant has been awarded that will allow the school and recreation district to proceed with plans to upgrade the athletic field lighting, construct a regulation-sized track, and other related projects (see article elsewhere in this issue for full details). Over the past 12 months, the district has been a participant in grants totaling about $480,000.

Principal Christy Graham reported that having the gymnasium open Monday nights from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. for women’s activities has been successful, though Tuesday and Thursday night general open sessions have not yet attracted anyone for use of the facility. Board members accepted a bid of $11,500 from Ron Austin for a van the district wanted to sell. There were no bids for the vocational agriculture pickup, which had a starting bid of $5,000. The district has previously been offered $4,000 by Burt Chevrolet, however plans call for the pickup being made available at the FFA labor auction February 17. The board approved Konda Howard as Kitchen Manager, and Deb Kliesen as Kitchen Assistant. The next regular board meeting will be held February 24. |
