Eads Girls Improve to 10-2 after Successful WeekendJanuary 31, 2003 The Eads Lady Eagles, under the guidance of Coach Shawn Randel, are playing some good ball these days and showed the large weekend crowds some very nice fundamental basketball and tremendous athletic ability. Eads dominated both their opponents beginning with Cheraw on Friday night where they entered the Wolverine Den and came out with a 88-40 win and then went on to load up on a down Granada team, 62-35, on Saturday night in Eads. Eads’s full-court pressure and outstanding offensive skills ended the game early in Cheraw as the Wolverines could only find six points in the entire first half, four coming from former Eads player, DaNae Wall. For the Eagles, however, it was a shoot-out with guard Treva Richardson hitting three of her four long balls in the first half and then setting up her posts, Jessica Watts and Darci Weeks, with some nice penetration kick offs for easy lay ups. The passing was probably the best the team has exhibited thus far. Eads would be explosive throughout the first half with a number of players hitting for points which included 19 in the first stanza and a game-breaking 28 points in the second quarter. Eads would be in total control 47-6 by halftime. The second half saw more offensive punch by Eads but the support personnel would get plenty of important practice time for the rest of the game. Cheraw would get more offensive production against the secondary Eagle defense with Wall having a nice second half hitting for 16 of her 18 points in the game including going 7 for 8 from the charity line. However, Cheraw could no-where match up to Eads’ overall production and would never threaten in the second half. The Eagles would get scoring from 11 players with Watts leading the group hitting for 18 post points and guards Richardson and Tiffanie Gooden producing from the outside with 14 apiece, while the nice freshman shooter, Kerissa Sicklebower, would get in double figures hitting for 10 points in the contest. The Eads JV group would also control Cheraw, 42-19 with the Eagles getting production from a number of players led by point guard Alyssa Hadley with 10 counters.

Granada, who has produced some exceptional teams in the past and are led this year by a couple of nice senior guards in Buffy Marquez and Dawn Baca, came to Eads on Saturday night but was no match for the Lady Eagles who put them away early in a 62-35 win. It would be the first quarter press from Eads that blew the game open right away and produced 26 Eagles points coming from both the inside and outside positions. Granada would also get in foul trouble by the first quarter allowing Eads to shoot 18 free throws in the first half. Once again, the support personnel for Eads got plenty of work on the court and managed to maintain the game for Eads. By half it was Eads up 40-20. The scoring production for Eads would slow into the final two quarters as the veteran mentors would watch the younger players battle against the physical Bobcats. Scoring production for Eads once again came from a number of players with Gooden hitting for 14 points and Watts adding 12. Morrell Koch, Richardson, and Weeks would produce nine, eight, and eight respectively. Eads will now host a decent 2A Wiley team on Thursday with JV action beginning at 4 PM. They will be idle on Friday but will then travel to Limon on Saturday night where they will meet up with Merino, a good 2A team from the far north. |
