About TownJanuary 31, 2003 Again many, many service men and women are going through the process of preparing to go overseas. I’m sure they need prayers for them and their families as they head into unknown duties. Take time to keep them in your prayers. (This is brings back many memories to me…when my relatives left for military duties.) Justin Ellicott of Wauneta, Nebraska, and Matt Ellicott of Fort Collins were judges for the Collegiate livestock judging contest at the National Western Stock Show. They are the son and grandson of George and Dorothy Ellicott of Eads. Faye Barber, Anne Cole, Pansy Foxworthy, and Esther McCoin attended the dinner and meeting of the council on the Area of the Aging at Bent’s Fort Inn Tuesday. We appreciate these ladies for keeping Eads senior citizens informed on new information. Sincere Sympathy to the family of Saul Newman who was an Eads pharmacist for many years before moving to Pueblo. Cards could be sent to Shirley Newman, 1622 Bunker Hill Rd, Pueblo, CO 81001-2008. It was nice to have Pam Lessenden drop by for lunch. We don’t often see their busy family. Anyone over Haswell way who wants to join the Haswell 4-H club for a year of fun and project work….enrollment is open now. Cards could be sent to Lee and daughter, Kathy Hill at 4650 Apple Grey Lane, Colorado Springs, CO 80892 since the death of Jane Hill, a former Eads resident. I remember her as a very accomplished organist at the Eads United Methodist Church. Ila Eckenrode of Las Animas spent last Tuesday with her brother, Dan Garner and wife, Evelyn. We were pleased to have Evelyn visit us Saturday afternoon. Evelyn like some of the rest of us is going through lots of years of treasures and stuff to save or give away. The Artist of the Plains had their monthly business meeting Tuesday, January 21st and they also celebrated Sandra Jones’ birthday. Her mother, Lil Penn, said their family is also celebrating the birth of her great grandson, born to the daughter of her daughter, Linda in Golden. Lil says they have mostly girls in their families. A tip of the hat to our wonderful volunteers who bring lunch in really cold weather or sunshine. We are blessed. Congratulations to Darrel and Jodi (Michael) Stolzenberger who have a baby son, Chase Michael, to join them and their daughter, Molly. Sincere sympathy to the family of Edna DeLong of Eads who passed away over the weekend. She will be missed by her large family of relatives. A special appreciation to out-going Hospital Board Members, Vivian Gifford, Lola Igou, and Sandie Kelley, who have served several years. These ladies have had relatives in the Nursing Home and Hospital so they know some of the needs of the facilities. We thank them for their years of volunteer work for the good of our community. Some of the Eads fans were pleased to have a tour by Sam Mitchek of the new Cheyenne Wells Middle School and remodeled High School while they were at the Junior High basketball tournament last week. I’m sure it is impressive to see a new school with all the improvements. The Eads teams played in the championship games on Thursday.

Chuck and Sherry Bowen of Lamar visited their long time friend and former teacher, Doris Lessenden. They had a great visit and I enjoyed listening. They are in the photography business as well as own the storage facility here in Eads. They were going to visit her parents, Ben and Laverne Fischer. They also check on their cattle out at the Buster and Frances Bowen Ranch. Buster and Frances had new kitchen and dining room tile put in their home last week. One very frosty morning they drove into town to have a great breakfast at the café. Frances told Doris that it was really a great treat. The Class A "On the Way" State Wrestling rankings list Eads Sophomore, Kelly Lindholm as 7th place in the 145 pound division. Cody Fry brought home 3rd place and Shawn Kraft won 4th place. The Eads Wrestlers and community will be hosting a big tournament Saturday, February 1 at about 9:30 a.m. to early evening. The FFA will have a meal to help fund the scholarship monies and the juniors will have their meals for the fans also. On Sunday we were sad to hear of the death of Pearl Hainer. Our sincere sympathy to the family and her friends from the Eads Assembly of God Church who were so good to visit her while she was in the Nursing Home and at Unity Village. Congratulations to Dustin Owens and Summer Osborne formerly of Eads who were married in Haxtun Saturday the 25th. Summer is the granddaughter of George and Dorothy Ellicott of Eads and the niece of Brenda and Butch Robertson of Chivington. Ginger Larrew, her college and 4-H friend from Eads, was a bridesmaid as well as she baked and decorated the wedding cake. Lacy Law formerly of Eads was the maid of honor and her brother, Tyler, was the ring bearer. We are sorry to hear that Bess Piper has been in the hospital in Colorado Springs. Rex’s daughter, Patty, from Holly has been with them for several days. We had several days of very frosty weather that lasted all day last week. It was pretty and really white on the way to Kit Carson to church Sunday morning, but we did come home to sunshine. We really have not had moisture in all these frosty days, so keep praying for a big rain or snow. Even though it was a cold, frosty day last week, thirty nine people came for the monthly Senior Citizens dinner. Here are some news notes from President Faye Barber: Please let Faye or Mary Anne Hulteen know if you would like to go to Senior Day at the State Capitol on March 19th. Only a limited number can go on the bus. The cost is $5.00. Citizens are asked to be thinking about ideas to celebrate "Older Americans Month" in May. Pansy Foxworthy and Faye went to Stratton to the Task Force which is about legislative happenings. They went with Donna Rhode the District Director of AAA . The next meeting will be February 19th with roast beef on the menu supplied by George Crow. The Eads Basketball Teams were victorious over the week-end and will be facing Wiley on Thursday in Eads and on February 7th here with Kit Carson which will also feature the "Pack the Gym" Event. After Rachel R. Buck had a scavenger hunt that led her to a surprise noon lunch at Our Place Restaurant, she found her four grandmothers and other friends and relatives for her there to celebrate her 16th birthday with her. We are glad to hear that Allen Peterson of Kit Carson is better after being flown on the Flight for Life plane. He is home now and recuperating. The back page of the 4-H newsletter had an excellent "Code of Conduct" that I’m hopeful that 4-H leaders will point out to 4-H members to abide by. Most 4-H youth already do so. That’s what makes 4-H such a great program. This kind of code needs to be presented to all youth in schools and clubs. It is very worthwhile. |
