Southeast Colorado Bull Test 37 Day Report

The 30 bulls in the 29th annual Southeast Colorado Bull Test were weighed on January 2, 2003 after completing 37 days on feed. Breeds participating in this years test include: Hereford, Gelbvieh, Angus, Brangus, and Salers. The bulls are receiving a low energy/ high roughage "grower" ration.

Overall the bulls are doing very well this year, posting an average daily gain, for all 30 bulls on test, of 4.97 pounds per head per day. The bulls came into the test about 70 pounds lighter than last year, but are now only about 20 pounds lighter than the same period from the previous test.

Two bulls in this years test gained over 6 pounds per day for this initial feeding period. The top gainer was an Angus bull from Anetta’s Angus, Springfield, with an average daily gain of 6.11 pounds per day. A Brangus bull owned by Wheatland Brangus, Lakin, Kansas, gained 6.08 pounds per day.

The Brangus breed group posted the highest rate of gain as a breed with 5.28 pounds per day and the Salers bulls had the highest weight per day of age with 3.03 pounds per day and an average age of 303 days.

Quality of the bulls is very good and we are pleased to have several new cooperators in the test. Please call (719) 438-5321 or (719) 336-7734 if you have questions on individual bulls, about the testing program, or wish to receive a printed report from the test.
