Progressive FCE Club NewsJanuary 10, 2003 The Eads Progressive FCE Club was hosted by Sis Howard in her home on Goff Street December 19th. To begin the meeting, President Maxine Mays read First Lady Laura Bush’s National Greeting, "All Things Great and Small". For roll call the ladies recalled "an unusual gift I received" which ranged from items like a potato ricer, clothes dryer, Geisha jewelry box, a Lyle Alzado fitness tape, fresh red roses, and a slicer were among the surprises. The members donated money following a monthly "Cup of Dough" list which adds to the clubs treasury. Each month they donate to "Nickels for Leadership" and "Pennies for Friendship." Treasurer Ruth Wissel will mail these donations to the national organizations as well as to the Peace Gardens on the Canadian border. Rather than having a personal gift exchange this year, each lady donated money to be sent to the Colorado Boys Ranch near La Junta for a scholarship fund. They also brought gifts of cookies and fruit breads which were taken to the Eads Home for Mary Holcomb’s residents and workers on Maine Street. Each lady brought three suggestions for future monthly roll calls. Sis Howard volunteered to run off the club books after the officers have designed the book. The President read a Christmas greeting letter from Margie Wiltfang, District FCE Chairwoman.

Zelda Peterson, Maxine Mays, and Doris Lessenden shared Christmas readings for the program. "The Legend of the Finch" was especially heartwarming about a bird who was trained to sing the melody of "Silent Night". The story was about the Emperor of Germany’s search to find the composer of the popular hymn which had been written for the guitar on Christmas Eve since the mice had ruined the cathedral’s organ. Mrs. Howard served a variety of beverages and cookies, cakes, and nut breads to her guests. Then a number of neighbors came over to enjoy the treats and to tour Charlie and Sis’s new home. The next meeting will be January 16th, 2003 at the Eads Senior Citizen Center. |
